NEW RECORDS

New Records is a record label that has emerged from the very active musical environment surrounding Gjøa Studio in Bergen, Norway.
http://www.gjoastudio.com
The studio is run and owned by the two of the city`s record producers Kato Ådland and Hans Petter Gundersen - aka The Sensible Twins.

From the time we opened the studio in 1997 we have fostered songwriters writing music that we find extraordinarily interesting. With studio time to explore their ideas and find their own directions without a meter running counting the expense, we have progressed onto recording albums when the time has felt right. Out of this approach, a very creative and sharing musical environment has developed around the studio. Different artists participate on one another`s recordings and more new and exiting songwriters find their way into the family.

A long-cherished dream to start our own label became reality in January 2002, and since then we have been able to follow our artists all the way from recording to release. Writing 2005, New Records has four artists - all of them recorded and produced in Gjøa Studio: Sergeant Petter, Matias Tellez, Helen Eriksen and House of Hiss.

MATIAS TELLEZ DEBUT ALBUM RELEASEDATE 1 OKT 07 !

MATIAS TELLEZ
TAMIAS MELLEZ (NRC013)

This is like setting 20 pop history DVDs to fast forward at the same time
and trying to keep an eye on the whole lot. One minute MT is out-mutating Os Mutantes the next he sounds like he's sending up the Bonzos.
Its an avalanche of absolutely smashing surprises. Elevator Radio goes from quoting the wierd EXP opening of Axis:Bold as Love into an Esqivel-esque piece of Hanna Barabara-rama. Then the ghost of Gilbert O'Sullivan walks in to croon us through the beautiful ballad Boy on the Moon. There go the Beach Boys, there's the Gang of Four, here's the Kinks, all stirred into the vintage Moulinex with liberal measures of loping street funk.
It's the high colour production and unstoppable energy of MT and his great band that make this record sizzle.
The highlights are too many to mention, but they still stand out, even though MT always seems to be inhabiting the wilder shores of psychedelic pop and his default setting seems to be on a par with the best Beck.'

MATIAS TELLEZ
MATIAS TELLEZ EP (NRC012)

Influenced by anything from 60s and 70s Argentinean pop groups Los Gatos and Litto Nebia, via the Brazilian Tropicalia of Os Mutantes and Caetano Veloso to the western psychedelia of people like Syd Barret and Tyrannosaurus Rex, Matias Tellez tells his humorous and engaging stories with the most unpredictable accompaniment.
After years of performing, writing and recording new material, Matias has now finally released his first EP, and the critics are already raving. A debut album is slated for a summer/fall release.

HOUSE OF HISS
GREATEST HISS (NRC011)

Songwriter Alisdair Stirling arrived from London like a Fostex Morricone,  with a bag of cassettes and a book on elevator music under his arm. What started out as a solo project, working lo-fi nights with Sensible Twins in the old Gjøa Studio, soon turned into a band with Jørgen Træen alongside Sensible Twins. And the House of Hiss network grew as people visited night and day contributing to the recording in different ways. The result of this was "No-Fi" - a small strange song book, but in turn of events the album never saw it`s release.
In later sessions in the new Gjøa Studio, more lovely guest and more lovely songs - not so much no-fi or even lo-fi anymore. More nu-fi - but tracks piling up and a hard story to edit!  We just went for the monster, 21 tracks, all styles and loads of thank yous.  http://www.myspace.com/houseofhiss

HELEN ERIKSEN
SMALL HALL CLASSIC (NRC 009)

Finally the time has arrived to present Helen Eriksen`s new album Small Hall Classic. The former Blue Note artist delivers an outstanding album that could be said to be a symbiosis of her previous efforts; attention to rhythm and minimalist precision recognizable from "Standards" and "Lovevirgin" (Blue Note) and live musicians providing an organic sound, continuing the journey on from "City Dust "(Curling Legs). The songs combine the structures of pop with Helen`s unique sense of harmony and improvisation. The album title refers to a well-known term in boxing, namely off-Broadway fights that turned ino classics before the very eyes of the baffled but few people in the audience. During the recording of Small Hall Classic, those magic moments were a plentiful. The time has now come to let more people in on Helen Eriksen`s own collection of Small Hall Classics.
